Public service

Why I ran

I believe decisions should be made by people of different ages, backgrounds and experiences.

Chapter 1 of 9 · 1 minute read

K. Patrice Williams standing in the Fairfield council chamber

Nearly thirty years ago I was a shy operations person whose knees shook when I spoke to more than three people. I knew I wanted public office, so I went to law school with that goal in mind.

Fairfield stayed on my mind because the city is beautifully diverse, and the people shown on its website at the time did not look like the city I knew.

Twelve votes. A clear responsibility.

I won my seat in 2022 by 12 votes. That margin freed me. I decided I would not vote to protect a seat. I would vote for the community now, explain every vote out loud, and ask more questions than anyone else on the dais.

I decided I would not vote to protect a seat.

The work that shaped me

My earlier jobs, my work in affordable housing, and the transitional homes I run for seniors and for women and children all shaped how I serve. In three years I attended 279 community events and meetings.

The next chapter

Let’s keep the conversation going.

I am writing a book and a case study, and planning workshops and a peer community for officials, candidates and staff.
