01

At events.

A note was left on the private gate of a fundraiser host the morning of the event, and the host and her guest speaker were targeted with emails. My event sign outside a nonprofit was cut to pieces.

02

At home.

A photo of my car outside my home was posted online and stayed up for months. A license plate at my residence was photographed. I checked the parking lot every time I came home.

03

In the chamber.

Staring, noise-making and pointing during public comment, then following people outside the chamber. Residents who spoke up for me were followed outside the chamber and found their faces turned into altered images the next day.

04

What it changed.

I stopped attending many of the ribbon cuttings, grand openings and lunches I loved. I stopped hosting most community events. Fewer officials in the room means fewer voices in the decision.

The next chapter

Let’s keep the conversation going.

I am writing a book and a case study, and planning workshops and a peer community for officials, candidates and staff.
